It might be time for an update…

All the things, they have changed. On March 1 our second child was born and she was born in epic fashion. First, her statistics. She clocked in at 7 lbs 7 ounces and 19.5 inches long. Her name is Kaitlyn Marie and her official birth time was 12:41pm on March 1, 2012.

Kaitlyn was about 6 days late but when this kid was ready to be born she was ready. I think the time from when I started having painful contractions to when she was actually born was around 3 hours. We barely made it to the hospital in time for me to get an epidural and I only got about 40 minutes out of that damn thing before she was out. This child didn’t even have a cone shaped head when she came out because she wasn’t hanging around for more than four pushes. SLOW YOUR ROLL KID. It is worth noting that the Anesthesiologist I had was the goddamn man. That dude got the epidural in between two minute contractions. I believe my reaction was to promise to send him a fruit basket. Look, I don’t claim to make sense when I’m in labor.

I feel worlds different after this birth than I did after Nathan’s. My son took 18 hours to be born with like 2.5 of those hours spent pushing. I was exhausted, had a horrible tear and took a good two weeks to recover physically. Emotionally was a whole other roller coaster of doom and frustration which took almost a year to sort itself out.

This birth is the total polar opposite. I was physically fine after one evening of rest and I’ve been able to pretty much hit the ground running since I’ve been home. The lack of sleep is a little less of an issue this time because I was getting so little of it while pregnant anyway that the three hour chunks I’m getting right now actually feel like an improvement.

Nathan seems to be handling this baby business a little better than I expected. He acknowledges that she’s a baby and she lives here but doesn’t make great strides to investigate much beyond that. He’s happy as long as he gets some attention from both Don and myself every day. There were lots of extra temper tantrums for a few days after I came home but that stuff seems to be sorting itself out and he’s adjusting. We’ll see how he feels about this shit once she’s crawling and attempting to put all his toys in her mouth.

(Spoilers: I don’t think that’s going to be handled very well)

We’re still trying to figure out how the balancing act is going to work with two children, especially when I go back to work in early June. I’m pretty sure we’ll figure it all out eventually. For now I’m just happy that I get to look at these two awesomesauce kids every day.

This one I call "Nugget." Also OMG CHEEEEEEKKKKSSS.

When he was born I called him "peanut." He is hardly that small anymore.

Congratulations! It’s great to hear a second birth story and see how different it is from the first. Our first was born a month early and I was in labor for 9 hours. I wonder what our second one will be like?
